R.S.Thomas was a vicar in Wales, a doubting believer perhaps. The poem ends
… testing his faith
on emptiness, nailing his questions
one by one to an untenanted cross.
When I lived in Honduras many years ago, a friend in Britain copied it onto airmail paper and sent it to me. I learnt it by heart and have treasured it ever since.
